World Championship Coyote Calling Contest®

HALL OF FAME

revised 7/25/2017

The World Championship Coyote Calling Contest® (WCCCC®)  HALL OF FAME is a special place where coyote callers are honored by their peers in the skill. The history of coyote-956689__180
coyote callers is not as old as the history of the wonderful and very clever coyote though. The skill of coyote calling began to gain popularity back in the 1950’s from what we can tell. The Midwest, with its large number of the coyote predators, found a need to control them to reduce the danger and losses of livestock and crop damage. Texas was the real growth area for methods and techniques for calling this elusive yet aggressive predator.

Hard working farm wives raising chickens and selling eggs and such found losses to coyotes of their
finest hens unacceptable. Coyotes killed and ate their ducks, geese,  guinea hens, small piglets, puppies, quail. pheasants, a watermelon crops, goats, sheep, lambs, apples from the trees, and more to the clever coyote cut into the family budget. The need to develop control methods grew.

Pioneers in calling techniques like those developed by J. Morton Burnham, who is known as the father of predator calling,  are still used today (1903). He and Murry  Burnham, Johnny Stewart, J.R. Alcorn and many more began to offer “coyote whistles” as many farmers and rancher
refereed to them as. In Kansas the Kansas State Extension Service had a full time employee like F. Robert Henderson back in the 60’s and 1970’s who’s job was to teach farmers and ranchers how to do their own coyote control. Some learned and most were too busy farming or ranching to fool with it so the coyote caller was born.

The WCCCC®  Hall of Fame honors those that contributed to the sport the most. It has nothing to do with success in hunting or removing coyotes but everything to do with helping Americans better understand this crafty and dangerous predator. The WCCCC® is proud to host this distinction and recognition of those that contributed the most to the sport of coyote calling.
